4% of “Airmen” are Women

March 24, 2019 Drone Industry, Uncategorized certification, drones, FAA, part 107

The fancy stamp on my test result paper, administered at the East Hill Flying Club in Ithaca, NY

Back in February, I passed the test to become a commercially certified unmanned aircraft pilot by the Federal Aviation Administration. Anyone can fly a drone for recreation, but if you want to get legally paid for your services, you need to pay $150 and pass this multiple choice test. The test itself is quite challenging to anyone unfamiliar with aeronautical charts, weather codes, and airport runway protocols.

After some serious studying, I got an A. I’m excited to be certified, and proud to be part of the 4% of “airmen” who are women. I hope that this percentage increases, and I’m confident it will as more women enter the field and train others. I’ve joined a few groups on Facebook including Women Who Drone and Amelia Dronehart. So far I’ve enjoyed the spirit of camaraderie and supportive vibes in both.

Ithaca’s Murals from a New Perspective

For about a year now, I’ve been working on a film about Ithaca’s public murals with an emphasis on pieces with social justice and multicultural themes. I completed a half-hour rough cut that screened at last year’s Ithaca Festival and have since been working on expanding the film to feature-length. A few weeks ago I […]
